- Tumblr bans adult content: In December 2018, Tumblr announced a ban on “adult content”, which was met with backlash and confusion from its users. Many criticized the vague and inconsistent enforcement of the policy, as well as the ousting of sex workers and adult content creators from the platform.
- Tumblr’s botched NSFW filter: As part of its crackdown on adult content, Tumblr introduced an automated filtering system that was supposed to flag and remove NSFW posts. However, the filter soon proved to be flawed, mistakenly removing innocent content and leaving explicit posts untouched. This led to further frustration and mockery of Tumblr’s efforts to clean up its platform.
- The end of Tumblr fandoms? Some fans of fandoms centered around explicit content or mature themes worry that Tumblr’s crackdown on adult content will lead to the death of their communities. While there are still ways for these fandoms to exist and thrive online, the loss of a popular platform like Tumblr has certainly caused a stir in some corners of the internet.
